Las canciones de la última etapa de Sentenced [wiki] son, para mí, bastante deprimentes, lo cual es todo un éxito teniendo en cuenta el estilo musical que abordan. Y ya que no los había mencionado antes, aquí dejo un par de muestras de lo que comento:

TOM ARAYA: SLAYER’s Lyrics Are ‘Just Words And They’ll Never Interfere With What I Believe’

Jenny Feniak of the Edmonton Sun recently conducted an interview with SLAYER frontman Tom Araya. A few excerpts from the interview follow:

On being “the most evil band in the world”:

“It’s all about the cool factor – that’s the main point. If something we find is really cool and gory and graphic, we’ll go with it.”

On being still at the top of its game 25 years after the band’s inception:

“Our vision of how we see the band has been the same; that’s never altered. We’ve never shied away from what we initially started this band as, but we have grown in all aspects of that.”

On the band’s early days:

“It sounded amazing, so I was in. It was easy as that. They [Kerry, Jeff and Dave] were into it; we knew the songs, you know. It’s kind of hard to find a group of guys that serious about that.

“We didn’t want to look like all the hair bands that were coming out at the time.

“We didn’t want to look like girls; we wanted to look like a bunch of guys putting on makeup like guys. That was a must.

“So we did everything completely opposite of that, which included the dark image, you know, that whole Satan vibe. And our first album being Side 6 Side 66, people were really freaking out over that.”

On possible issues between his Catholic faith and the band’s subject matter:

“Kerry‘s written some really far-out shit. If it’s a good song, I’m not one that’s going to go, ‘This sucks because it’s contrary to my beliefs.’ To me it’s more like, ‘This is really good stuff. You’re going to piss people off with this.’

“People have these heavy issues and ask, ‘Isn’t this a problem for you?’ and no. I’m well-rounded, I have a really strong belief system and these are just words and they’ll never interfere with what I believe and how I feel.

“People are not in good shape to where they have to question their own belief system because of a book or a story somebody wrote, or a SLAYER song.”

On the current metal scene:

“(Metal’s) like a serpent that comes up out of the water and you see all his ripples and his humps, and then he goes back down into the water to brood for a while and then he comes back up.

“I think right now it’s at its momentum. It’s above water and it’s cruising for awhile.

“Give it a couple years and it’ll go back down again and then it will become an underground thing, and then all the kids in the new generation will discover the bands that started it all, and then there’ll be reunions….”

Atlantic’s efforts to block a parody of James Blunt’s hit “You’re Beautiful” has Yankovic fighting back publicly, and using his Web site as a tool to do so. Instead of fighting with the label, “Weird Al” is giving the song away for free!

Aparte de que Weird Al [wiki] me parece un genio por derecho propio, con una acción como ésta ha ganado bastante kudos.

Y como no hice ningún post el día del orgullo gay, aquí dejo la siguiente portada, que también tiene su gracia:

Para los que no entiendan muy bien cómo alguien puede poner un título de disco así, habría que recordar que el significado de gay (o el adjetivo español “gayo”) significa(ba) alegre y/o vistoso, transformando su uso al que hoy en día todo el mundo conoce. Lo curioso del asunto es que “gayo” es otro nombre utilizado para las urracas, que también son (o eran) conocidas como “maricas” en algunos pueblos de Zamora. En este caso, creo que el origen es otro, ya que, si no me equivoco, “maricas” era como se conocía a los monjes dominicos, que llevan un hábito blanco y negro, y por eso se establecía el paralelismo con las urracas. Aunque es posible que sea alrevés (que llamasen “maricas” a los monjes por su parecido con las urracas/maricas).

Veteran Polish death metallers VADER have revealed the track listing for their new album, “Impressions in Blood”, due in Europe on September 4 via Regain Records. The CD was recorded at Hertz Studio in Bialystok, Poland and will feature artwork by Greek artist Seth (ROTTING CHRIST, PARADISE LOST).

VADER will play no less than five new songs during their upcoming Blitzkrieg 4 tour, which is scheduled to kick off September 17 in Waraw, Poland.

Y el 14 de Octubre actuarán en la sala Ritmo y Compás.

De vez en cuando me da la vena progresiva, que suelo apaciguar con una dosis del proyecto conocido como Liquid Tension Experiment [wiki], promovido por Mike Portnoy [wiki], y que contaría con otros dos integrantes de Dream Theater [wiki]: John Petrucci [wiki] y Jordan Ruddess [wiki] (que participó en estos trabajos antes de entrar en Dream Theater). Independiemente del hecho que DT no me gusta, esta plantilla de por sí es técnicamente impresionante, aunque aún sería mejorada con Tony Levin [wiki].

El resultado de esta colaboración es un producto que merece una mención más extensa de la que puedo hacer ahora, así que, por el momento, dejo unos videos de una actuación del grupo, en el que se puede ver que hasta los más profesionales tienen fallos:
